I now have a Patreon!

Hello everyone!I'm Roxy Polk, a freelance comics and game artist and i now have a patreon! You can find it here:

https://www.patreon.com/roxypolk/overview

If you decide to venture over there, then THANK YOU, I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to look at my work and would be eternally grateful if you decide to stick around and become a patron! Here's some more info about me and what you can get as a patron who supports me!

I lost my job at a start up company last year when they started downsizing, and am currently struggling to make ends meet with living expenses and student loans on a freelancers infrequent sustainability, so your help as a patron allows me to live like a regular human and produce art. The first goal will be to get to $600 a month which will allow me to update Lacuna Break twice a week, and update Transpose Operator once a month. This is no small feat and I don't know when we'll get there, but I want to ask for your help to achieve this goal. I can't do this alone, and anything you are able to spare will help us get there.

I'll have a ton of ideas for future milestones and such but those are a long ways off. Let me tell you about the breakdown of the different patron tiers!

---- AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE ----

-LACUNA BREAK-
I have a webcomic that updates every Tuesday called Lacuna Break!
www.lacunabreak.com

Lacuna Break is a sci-fi road trip adventure about an ex-security officer named Eris Tanner, and an alien con man named Galett Feros. Eris wakes up in a time far into the future long after humanity has become a memory, and stumbles into a partnership with Galett in order to find a lost ship that could prove humanity is not as extinct as she thinks. In their journey they infiltrate space pirates bases, and stumble into secret mafia auctions among other things. All the while meeting tons of different characters along the way, and finding out more about each other.
I love found families, space, and adventure stories--in particular road trip stories, so I wanted to make a story of my own with these elements, and that is Lacuna Break!

-ART LIVE STREAMS-
Come have a work day with me every Thursday! I will be doing live streams via twitch every Thursday, starting on May 24th. These will usually last from 2-4 hours depending on what I'm working on that day. I'll post announcements ahead of time about when the stream starts. I will have audio so I can chat will you all, and you can get to know me and see my process. These will be relaxed and fun, so come by and say hello~
These will be available to everyone as they are on twitch, so follow or subscribe to me on twitch and twitter to get notifications.
Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/rox_box
Twitter: https://twitter.com/roxypolk

---- $1+ PATRONS ----
-BEHIND THE SCENES ACCESS-
For becoming a $1+ patron you will get access to sketches, art, scripts, and other cool behind the scenes stuff from me. A lot of this will be Lacuna Break and Transpose Operator related, but there will be other stuff too, like pin designs, game art, fan art, and all kinds of other stuff. Some of the things I post will be specifically for patreon, and other stuff will be patreon early access, so I might post it to my blog or other online places later, but you will get to see it first, right here!

---- $5+ PATRONS ----

TRANSPOSE OPERATOR
Transpose Operator was my first webcomic, and as many of these projects go, it got away from me in terms of scale and scope. This does not mean that I gave up on it, but I put the comic on permanent hiatus. I am now re-imagining the story as more text based, and will combine illustrations, comics, and prose. This is a Patreon exclusive and will be available to those of you paying $5+. Eventually I will make a new website for Transpose Operator in it's new form, but chapters will always go up on Patreon first, no matter what, so you will be able to read it before everyone else on the internet!

Chapter 1 will debut August 6th, and there will be a new complete chapter every 2 months.

Transpose Operator is a far future sci-fi story taking place on a unknown planet. Humanity and synthetic lifeforms are fighting a losing battle against the Cult of the Red Queen, whose followers are infected with a possession that science cannot explain. These few vestiges that continue to fight are known as The Resistance, whose members are the last sane humans and synthetic lifeforms on the planet. They fight not only for their own survival, but the survival of all life on their planet.

"My ears were ringing from the blast, my vision was blurred, the scene before me was chaotic and unclear. When my vision came back into focus, I could see a large portion of the hallway I had just been running down was now gone, and in its place was a gaping hole revealing the destruction outside.
Plumes of smoke, gunfire, screams… The war was here… the war had come to the capitol… and it had been Max and I who had let them in. As I looked out through the missing hallway I could see the fighting below, I could see my colleagues dying and I had to ask myself… had we done the right thing?"

There will be a lot of violence and mature themes in this story, so it is a 15+ recommended rating. If there is something in particular I need to warn readers of about the contents of the story I will preface that given chapter with a warning, so you will not be caught unaware of the content.

---- $15+ PATRONS ----
I will send you a digital thank you card featuring my art every month. These will be new every month and will be available on my etsy as a physical object, they retail at $5. I will mail you a physical copy of the postcard/print so you can use it as a mini print and frame it, or send it out to your friends or family to say hello. Shipping these can be costly on my end since I will be sending them first class--not as a mailed postcard--so I will send these out every 3 months. You can expect 3 new postcards delivered to you roughly 4 times a year if you are a regular $15+ patron.

If your tier fluctuates, say you can only be $15+ for a month or two throughout the year, I'll ship out your rewards at the end of the year after I do a tally of your pledge months.
Mailing will start at the end of September 2018. The next mail date will be every 3 months from then onward.

-FUTURE PLANS!-
Once the patreon reaches $600+ a month I can start planning more projects beyond Lacuna Break's 2-times a week update, and Transpose Operator's 1 chapter a month goals. I'll have more specific plans when/if we get there.

-IN CLOSING-
Thank you so much for getting this far in the post. If you can help me achieve my dreams of making my own stories for a living I will be eternally grateful. I'm looking forward to creating lots of awesome stuff and sharing it with you.
again you can find my patreon here:

Rose City Comic Con 2017!

I tabled at RCCC this year and had a blast! I met a ton of great people, including online friends who I had never met IRL before, and made some new friends too! Not to mention I just got to see a lot of  awesome work by awesome people, and sell my own stuff.

Here was my booth set up:
I shared the table with Mel Ujimori! you can check out her website to see more of her awesome work: https://www.merumori.com/

Since the postcards I made double as mini-prints I framed the series of 3 Nier Automata images I did. I also found some LED candles with prints that match the patterns of the Yorha uniforms and put them in front of the pictures... it ended up looking like a memorial, LOLOLOLOLOL

And in an amazing twist of fate someone named Panacea stopped by my table and bought a copy of Panacea and we got a picture together! SUPER COOL!

I did a sketch commission of an Xmen character as well that was super fun to do!

I printed a bunch of postcards to sell as well, this was my whole lineup:
I completely sold out of the Tali post cards, and ALMOST sold out of the Garrus ones. I'm gonna be doing a series of postcards for Mass Effect to match the new Garrus one I did, so I'll be redesigning the Tali and Liara ones, as well as doing a Wrex, Fem Shep and Bro Shep ones too. I'll probably do more characters later too but time will tell :)

Overall it was a super fun show, and I'm super glad I did it! Not sure if I'll be tabling next year as they're upping the table price and changing it back to a 2-day show. I'll be doing more shows next year and will keep you all in the loop about it. Next year is gonna be great!

Full-time Freelance announcement!

Heya!

I don't post much personal stuff online, but I've gone through enough life changes recently that I felt it necessary to have a blog post about it and fill in anyone wondering what I've been up to lately. The biggest news of which is......

I'M NOW FULL-TIME FREELANCE!

After art college I did a lot of traveling, interning and learning until ultimately I got a job as an editor at Dark Horse Comics, I was there for about 3 years. I ended up leaving to work at a comics start-up located in San Francisco while working remotely, I worked there for about a year until the companies constant changes resulted in layoffs. While this was a surprise, there was writing on the wall so I half expected it when the hammer dropped, I just didn't think it would happen as quickly as it did. So I started off the 2017 new year both terrified and excited at the prospect of what I would do next.

I had been doing freelance and commissions ever since college, my several year long webcomic Transpose Operator launched after I graduated, art was what I wanted to do full-time. But as everyone knows, comics is a harsh world to survive in, doubly so when you have crippling student loans. While my day jobs were comic related I was on the managerial side of it, helping other people with their stories, and working on some super fulfilling projects. However these weren't MY projects, something I was constantly aware of over the years as I saw others complete their projects while my own sat on the sideline. So while I was terrified about how I would survive, this was also the perfect opportunity to make the jump to doing art full-time like I had always planned for.

I launched my portfolio website at the beginning of the year:

http://www.roxypolk.com/

Soon after that I participated in the Global Game Jam for 2017, and made a space exploration game with a group of friends. It was called Skylight and you can find it online and play it from your browser:
https://lucidsheep.itch.io/skylight

I became the editor on Supernatural Attraction, a comic by writer Kel McDonald, line artist Kara Leopard, and colorist Whitney Cogar. The story is about Persephone, who died and was brought back to life by her friend Victoria. Now she can see the supernatural creatures hiding in plain sight. It's a romantic comedy series that fans of shojo manga will enjoy.

I printed my first self-published comic that wasn't a mini-comic and tabled for myself for the first time at ECCC this year. It was an exciting experience where I got to see old friends and make new ones, all the while learning about what other people were making... aaaand buying a ton of enamel pins.

I've been planning a new webcomic that I'll be launching in a few months. It's a sci-fi adventure story about the last human and a bunch of aliens going on a road trip through space to find an important relic. I wish I had a piece of key art to put here but instead here's a few images and a link to the first blog post about this new project:
http://roxyssketches.blogspot.com/2017/04/eris-tanner.html

Expect a bunch more posts in the coming months about this comic <3 p="">

I've also been ramping up my commissions and freelance work. In the past few months I've had a lot of great projects to work on, as well as lot of great projects that ended up falling through due things beyond my control. And as of right now I'm open to take on new work!
Here's the link to my portfolio website to check out my current work:

Below I'll give a breakdown of what you can hire me for!

-FREELANCE: Comics, Games & Animation-
-COMIC ART:
I'm available to be the sole artist on a project, or to do a specific part, like just the line art or coloring. I'm flexible depending on what you're looking for so hit me up and let's chat about rates and what you want. I also do covers as well as interiors, and work in black and white or color depending on what you're looking for.
Check out the comic art section of my portfolio website for examples:

-COMIC EDITORIAL WORK: I was an editor at Dark Horse for years, as well as an editor at a comic tech startup, and other freelance specific projects. I've been with some projects since the beginning, helping the team to polish their work until it's completion. On some projects I've just done script and story editing, it varies, so once again let me know what you're looking for and let's talk.

-STORYBOARDS: I currently don't have a section for this on my portfolio site due to past client work not being available for public viewing. I'll be doing some samples of my own to show later. But I do have experience in storyboards and am available for hire, whether it's animation, video games, live action or something else.

-CHARACTER DESIGNS:
I can use my own particular art style, or change it up to fit what you're looking for, starting from rough sketch ideation to fully realized completion: painted realistic style, crisp anime cel art, cartoony exaggerated styles, or whatever else you're looking for.
check out the section of my website specializing in character design:

-CONCEPT ART:

Backgrounds, characters, props, whatever you need in whatever particular style you're looking for, from rough sketch ideation to polished completion.
Check out my portfolio website to see multiple examples:

-ILLUSTRATION:

Editorial illustrations, key art, comic covers, etc. Again these are usually always specific to the project you need me for, and I'm flexible in style and application.

--please email me at roxypolk (@) gmail.com for freelance inquiries

And that's it for the rundown on what I've been up to lately and some stuff in the near future! The next few months are going to bring a lot of changes and I'm excited to see what happens next!
