Grimoire Sketches part 4!

Continuing on with more sketches from my comic project "Grimoire", we've got more characters, and  some creature designs! There has been a lot of process behind what the rules of the creatures in this story adhere to, and this was in the beginning stages of figuring that out.

One of my current pitch projects is about a group of kids in a modern-day setting clashing with a magical "other-world", however it's kinda alternated from that to being a pure fantasy setting. Here's a bunch of sketchy character concepts from the story!

Mia Sketches and other stuff

Wow, some of these are super old, from before I had completely nailed down Mia's character. It's interesting to see these older sketches right alongside the newer ones. Originally I had been writing this story as a novel, and it's changed a lot since then, so it makes sense that Mia changed too. There's also some thumbnails from a scene I may or may not be using in the final version, either way it's fun to experiment with this kind of stuff

Have some more Grimoire Sketches and news about my life

The writing for this project is taking longer than it should have because of how busy I've been with freelance, and moving etc. It's still coming along though which is the most important part! Here's some more sketches of the main characters to tide you over for while you wait for news on this thing.

And on a more personal note, I have recently moved to Los Angeles for the next 5 months or so to do an internship at Archaia. I first heard about them when I bought Gunnerkrigg Court Vol 1, and the more I investigated about their titles the more excited I got about them as a publisher. Their books are so beautiful!!! They publish original material with a wide range of art styles and subject matter which is really refreshing to see, between them and Oni Press, the comics world is looking brighter and brighter.

When you start the internship you create something called the 'stack of shame'... in other words you go into the warehouse and take one of every title you haven't read yet to be familiar with what the company puts out. Man... I thought I knew most of their titles but it turns out there was more than I ever thought! It's overwhelming how ignorant I was... but then again then that means I have a TON of great comics to read!

I'm only a few days in but I've already picked up info on marketing and publishing that have been really useful. I can't even imagine how much I'll learn by the end of the internship.

Being in Los Angeles is a huge change from what I'm used to as well. When I looked out of the plane window as I headed into the Burbank airport the sheer size of the city was overwhelming… I've never lived in a place this huge before. The ride into the office is over an hour(I’m still figuring out the timing with traffic…), and in case you’re not aware, Los Angeles traffic is awful. By comparison when I was in Portland everything was public transit, heck I WALKED most places. In Alaska, our biggest highway is 3 lanes and tiny! There’s tons of cool stuff to look at and places to go here, I’m going to need to make a list of all the things I want to do since there’s so many. I’m looking forward to getting used to the city and my internship, and doing a TON OF COMICS in the meantime.
